| ¡¡¡¡Letter
of Invitation from President of the International Association for
the Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS). |
Dr. Hans R. Herren |
|
| ¡¡¡¡The
15th International Plant Protection Congress (15th IPPC) will be held
in Beijing, China, during May 11-16, 2004. This Congress is not only
the first international plant protection Congress in the 21st Century,
but also the first to be sponsored by the International Association
for Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS) and organized by the China Society
of Plant Protection. Please allow me, on behalf of the IAPPS, to invite
all plant protection scientists from around the world and encourage
them not to missthis important event.Plant protection |
issues are again at the
top of the agricultural production agenda, with needs for more food
while at the same time assuring sustainable, affordable and environmentally
sound production and respecting the consumer needs and wishes.
¡¡¡¡The IAPPS is an independent
umbrella organization established at the 14th IPPC in Jerusalem, Israel
in July, 1999 to address important current issues in international
plant protection. The Association promotes sustainable and integrated
and agro-ecosystems based approach to management of plant pests and
diseases and weeds. The Governing Body (GB) of IAPPS is supporting
the Organizing Committee of the 15th IPPC to assure a successful Congress
in Beijing.
It is well known that China, the hosting country, has an ancient culture
and agricultural history dating back thousands of years. According
to historical records, the earliest mention of insect control is found
in the Zhou Dynasty, ca. 3,000 years ago. The struggle between ancient
Chinese farmers and harmful insect pests has continued to the present
day, however,in recent years, the Chinese government has paid great
attention to modern plant protection science and technology and has
achieved notable success in controlling important insects and diseases
such as the migratory locust, armyworm and wheat rust, among others.
China is proud of its achievement in using 7 percent of the world
cultivated land to feed 22 percent of the world population. Needless
to say, modern plant protection has played an important role in increasing
agricultural production to this level.
¡¡¡¡In addition to its long history,
China has a famously rich scenic beauty. Pre- and post-Congress tours
can be organized at very reasonable charges and I would like to encourage
you take advantage of this very unique offer.
¡¡¡¡I looking forward to welcoming
you in 2004.
¡¡¡¡Yours truly, |
